Cooptown, Little River

Cooptown is 3ks from Little River which is 55ks from Christchurch.  Little River is a small rural town and has an Information Centre, Post Office, Craft Station (which is housed in the old Railway Station), General Store and Cafe, Art Gallery, Local Diner and a Country Hotel called “The Forsyth Arms” as it overlooks Lake Forsyth.  Little River also has a popular Rail Trail for cyclists and walkers.

Birdlings Flat is just 11ks away and it is famous for its colourful stones which are swept up from the seabed.  It is also a very good fishing beach.  Unfortunately you cannot swim here but there are other bays on Banks Peninsula where surfing and swimming is popular.

Akaroa is just 25mins over the hill from Cooptown and is a ‘must’ to visit.  It is a quaint French village where French whalers arrived and established their own ‘France’ away from home.  There are plenty of things to do here with scenic walks around the bays, plenty of cafes and restaurants, cinema, art and craft shops, locally made clothing shops, weekend market, wine tastings and most importantly ‘swimming with the dolphins’.
